MES Integration Enables Data-Driven Insights for Cable Manufacturer
E Tech Group deployed Sepasoft MES modules for a cable products manufacturer, enabling real-time monitoring, automated work order tracking, and intuitive visualization of performance metrics. The solution improved equipment efficiency, accelerated fault resolution, and delivered actionable insights—empowering data-driven decisions and reliable capacity planning.
The Project: Enable Data-Driven Equipment Performance
Manufacturers increasingly rely on digital production data to optimize machine performance and identify operational inefficiencies. However, many plants still lack integrated control systems capable of capturing, analyzing, and visualizing equipment performance metrics in real time.
A cable products manufacturer sought to improve operational efficiency by implementing a modern MES solution that would provide plant teams with reliable data on equipment performance, downtime events, and work order execution. By integrating MES functionality directly with production assets, we helped the client move from limited operational visibility to a data-driven approach for monitoring equipment effectiveness and improving production planning.
The Challenge(s): Major Blind Spots Prevent Proactive Planning
A leading cable products company faced persistent challenges with low Operational Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). The lack of actionable performance metrics and complex maintenance procedures hindered data acquisition and industrial analytics. Real-time and historical data visualization was limited, making proactive decision-making difficult. Additionally, inefficient work order tracking created gaps in operational visibility.
1. Subpar OEE Data
OEE combines three key factors to provide a comprehensive measure of how effectively production assets are operating: availability, performance, and quality. Without accurate OEE data, identifying the root causes of inefficiencies becomes significantly more difficult. For this cable manufacturer, the absence of reliable performance metrics meant that operational improvements were often reactive rather than proactive.
2. Limited Visibility
Another major challenge was the lack of centralized visibility into machine status and production events. Without real-time monitoring tools and a salient controls interface, operators and maintenance teams had limited insight into critical operational factors like:
- Equipment availability and utilization
- The duration and causes of downtime events
- Historical production trends and performance patterns
- Work order execution across production assets
This lack of visibility prevented the client from being able to respond quickly to equipment issues or identify and resolve recurring performance bottlenecks. These dual obstacles prevented any optimization efforts from becoming permanent, sustainable automation solutions.
3. Off-Track WO Tracking
The plant’s work order tracking process also created operational inefficiencies. Manual tracking methods introduced gaps in production documentation and made it difficult to maintain an accurate record of work order progress. Without automated work order visibility, production planners had limited insight into machine availability and order completion status. This created challenges for scheduling, capacity planning, and overall production coordination.
The Solution: Visualize, Modernize, Optimize
E Tech Group implemented Sepasoft MES modules focused on OEE and Downtime Tracking. Real-time data acquisition was deployed across critical production assets, enabling live monitoring of operational status. Archival reporting tools were developed to support trend analysis and performance investigations. Custom HMI dashboards provided intuitive visualization of OEE, downtime metrics, and WO status. Automated WO tracking minimized manual data entry and improved order visibility.
MES systems act as a bridge between shop-floor equipment and higher-level production management systems. By capturing operational data directly from machines and control systems, MES platforms enable manufacturers to monitor production performance in real time while maintaining a historical record of equipment activity. MES implementation created a centralized control system for collecting and analyzing performance data across the plant’s critical production assets.
The Results: Industry 4.0 Becomes Visible on the Horizon
The MES deployment led to a substantial increase in equipment efficiency, driven by clear bottleneck identification and actionable insights. Real-time and archival reporting empowered faster, data-driven decisions. Visualization tools accelerated fault diagnosis and resolution, while enhanced WO lifecycle management improved data fidelity and supported reliable capacity planning.
- With accurate OEE metrics and detailed downtime tracking in place, the manufacturer gained the ability to identify operational bottlenecks more effectively. This visibility allowed them to address inefficiencies that previously went unnoticed.
- The new visualization and reporting tools significantly improved the speed at which operators and maintenance teams could diagnose equipment issues. Instead of manually investigating machine events, engineers could review historical performance data and downtime reports to identify root causes more quickly, preventing downtime from unexpected failures.
- By improving work order tracking and production visibility, the MES platform also strengthened the manufacturer’s ability to plan production capacity. This data-driven approach enabled more reliable production scheduling and improved coordination across operations.
The MES system integration transformed how the client monitored and managed production performance. By integrating real-time data acquisition, advanced visualization tools, and automated work order management, the new automation system provided a comprehensive view of equipment performance across the plant.
With reliable performance data and industrial analytics now available, the client is free to pursue continuous improvement initiatives and expand its digital manufacturing capabilities, knowing the solutions they choose will become sustainable improvements, not futile fixes. E Tech Group’s automation solution not only improved equipment efficiency but also created a scalable foundation for future Industry 4.0 initiatives.
