E Tech Group Wins Major Marine Contract for Tugboat Fleet Alarm Systems

marine manufacturing

A major Midwest aggregate producer has awarded E Tech Group a fleet modernization project to design and implement a continuous, self-monitoring alarm system for its fleet of 11 “pusher” tugboats. The automation system upgrades will bring the vessel fleet into compliance with USCG Subchapter M’s safety mandates while modernizing engine room controls and monitoring. The project demonstrates E Tech Group’s ability to apply industrial automation expertise across marine and transportation environments.

First – What is Subchapter M?

Subchapter M is a set of federal safety regulations established by the US Coast Guard for towing vessels. It requires operators to meet strict safety standards for propulsion, steering, electrical systems, and routine maintenance.

A central requirement is having an automation system that integrates continuous, self-monitoring machinery alarms. These safety systems monitor vital ship stats like engine temperature, oil pressure, bilge water levels, and fire detection, then instantly alert the crew to equipment issues before they turn into critical failures and/or safety hazards.

Modernizing Commercial-Off-the-Shelf Automation Technology

The upgrade will be designed and implemented using modern Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) technologies like industrial PLCs and HMIs with ruggedized touchscreens. Unlike proprietary marine control systems that can be expensive, disruptive, and difficult to replace, utilizing standard COTS components offers:

  • Open Architecture: Allows easy software updates and future control system expansions as vessel needs change.
  • Ruggedized Design: Built to withstand harsh marine environments, including engine room heat, vibration, and humidity.
  • Scalability & Availability: Ensures replacement parts are readily available off the shelf, minimizing delays for upgrades, expansions, or repairs.

Project Scope & Automation Services

E Tech Group will deliver the full project lifecycle for all 11 fleet vessels:

  • Hardware Engineering: Custom control system layout and panel design engineered for limited, non-traditional spaces, ensuring timely installation and ease of maintenance post-commissioning.
  • Software Engineering: Logic programming to monitor key vessel parameters and deliver reliable, accurate alarms without false triggers.
  • Human-Machine Interface (HMI): Intuitive touchscreen displays located in the wheelhouse and engine room to provide detailed diagnostics, visual trends, and real-time operational status information to the boat’s crew.
  • Innovative Manufacturing Solutions: Pre-wired and pre-tested control system panels fabricated off-site to expedite the installation and reduce boat downtime during vessel dry-docking.
  • Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT): Rigorous simulation testing before installation, ensuring quality commissioning and serving as a training platform for the client’s technical team.
  • Ship Manuals & USCG Certification Support: Vessel-specific documentation, as-built wiring schematics, and operational procedures required for seamless USCG inspection and official certification.

Operational Impacts of Modernized Alarm Systems

Pushing heavy aggregate barges along Midwest waterways requires constant reliability. By replacing aging alarm panels with modern, automated monitoring and control systems, the fleet operator reduces the risk of unexpected engine failures, protects crew safety, and maintains seamless compliance with maritime safety laws.

Upgrading marine control systems to USCG subchapter M requirements doesn’t have to mean complex, proprietary hardware. By utilizing open COTS automation, E Tech Group’s experience as an aggregate automation integrator delivers clients reliable, easy-to-maintain alarm systems that keep towing fleets safe, efficient, and poised for future growth.
